Fire breaks out at Mydin's Ipoh branch

IPOH: A massive fire broke out at popular retail chain Mydin's store at Manjoi here.

The fire is believed to have started at about 7pm on Sunday (March 10).

According to a retail shop worker, the fire is believed to have started following a blackout at the premises.

"We heard that there was some kind of issue with the main fuse box at about 5pm.

"Repairmen were called in to check the problem," he said when contacted.

"When the electricity came back on, we proceeded to switch on the fusebox at our shop.

"As we switched it on, there were sparks and popping sounds before the electricity went out again," he added.

The worker, who declined to be named, said minutes later, there were shouts of fire and everyone was told to vacate the premises.

"When we went outside, we saw black smoke and fire on top of the building," he said.

He also said that firemen had encountered water pressure issues while trying to put out the fire.

"For about 30 minutes, the firemen just could not get enough water pressure," he added.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said firefighting operations are still ongoing.
